Before arrival

Before arrival

Nothing complicated. Just a few things that help you enjoy it more.

Weather, without surprises

Weather in Patagonia changes fast, and part of its charm is that nobody controls it. A few days before you arrive, check the forecast on AccuWeather.

What to bring

  • Layers: what you will appreciate most is being able to take clothes off and put them back on.
  • A windbreaker or waterproof jacket.
  • Comfortable walking shoes.
  • A hat, gloves and sunglasses, even in summer.
  • A camera or a spare battery: there will be a lot to photograph.

Getting here

From Balmaceda airport (the most common route)

It is about 177 km along the Carretera Austral (Route 7), roughly 3.5 hours without stops. You pass through Villa Cerro Castillo and the Bahía Murta turn-off, then continue south to the Lodge, which sits about 15 km before Puerto Río Tranquilo.

  • Balmaceda airport to Villa Cerro Castillo: 72 km, ≈1 h 10 min, paved.
  • Villa Cerro Castillo to the Lodge: 106 km, ≈2 to 2.5 hours, with the first 8 km paved and 98 km of gravel. Take it slowly here.

From Coyhaique

About 180 km, 3 to 3.5 hours. Follow Route 7 south to Villa Cerro Castillo (≈75 km, paved), then the same 106 km stretch to the Lodge. Coyhaique is the last big town: it is the best place to shop, withdraw cash and fill the tank before you set out.

From Puerto Río Tranquilo

We are about 15 km north along Route 7, 20 to 30 minutes away. If you are joining the Marble Caves tours, it is a very short distance.

From Chile Chico

About 178 km, close to 4 hours, along the south shore of the lake (Puerto Guadal, then Puerto Río Tranquilo). The road is winding, with gravel sections, and the views are spectacular. Stop to look: the stops are not in the estimate.

Where to refuel

There are stations at Copec Cerro Castillo and Copec Puerto Río Tranquilo. If you are coming from the north, fill up at Cerro Castillo and reach the Lodge with a full tank. Río Tranquilo is about 15 km further on.

Where to stop

  • Coyhaique: if you want to stock up before the trip (supermarkets, ATMs and services), stop here, since the route from the airport does not go through the city.
  • Villa Cerro Castillo: a good break to eat, stretch your legs and look up at the mountain. It also has fuel.
  • Viewpoints along the way.
  • Puerto Río Tranquilo: if you forgot something, it is close by.

What you will see on the way

The drive from Balmaceda is already part of the journey:

  • Cerro Castillo (Cerro Castillo National Park): a chain of towers and peaks of dark rock that look like a castle, with hanging glaciers and a turquoise lagoon at its foot. It is one of the most striking landscapes on the Carretera Austral and a much-loved trekking destination.
  • Valleys and rivers of the Aysén region: forests, pampas and clear-water rivers, with several viewpoints worth stopping at.
  • Lago General Carrera: near the end of the drive the lake appears, an intense blue. From there, the Lodge is very close.

Animals from the national coat of arms

Two of the animals on Chile’s coat of arms live in this area:

  • Andean condor: with a wingspan of almost three metres, it is common to see it gliding over the hills and cliffs. Look up on the mountain stretches, especially near Cerro Castillo.
  • Huemul: an endangered Andean deer, shy and hard to spot. If you see one, it is a gift, but a sighting is never guaranteed. We ask you to watch it from a distance and not to approach.

What people ask us most

Do I need a 4x4?

In summer, usually not: a car in good condition, with decent ground clearance and a full-size spare wheel, is enough. In winter, we recommend a pickup with studded tyres. Even with that kind of vehicle, and even if you cannot see snow, be extremely careful with black ice: it is invisible on the pavement and very slippery.

How much is paved and how much is gravel?

The road is paved as far as Villa Cerro Castillo. From there to the Lodge there are 8 km of pavement and 98 km of gravel. Gravel calls for slow driving because of loose stones and potholes, and trucks raise dust.

What if I arrive at night?

It is possible, but we do not recommend it. The road has almost no lighting, and animals such as cattle or guanacos can cross it. In winter it gets dark early. Our check-in is from 16:00 to 20:00. If you need to arrive outside those hours, we recommend asking in advance so we can confirm availability.

What about winter?

There are fewer hours of daylight, the road can have ice and snow, and some services close or reduce their hours. Journeys can take longer.

Is the road open?

Yes, but there are works in progress. On Route 7 (Carretera Austral), in the Murta – Puerto Río Tranquilo stretch, the Ministry of Public Works is paving the sections between Bahía Murta, Puente El Belga and Puerto Río Tranquilo.

Closures and detours in force (2026):

  • Murta junction – Puente El Belga: full road closure Monday to Friday between 13:00 and 17:00, until 31 December 2026, for road works.
  • Puerto Río Tranquilo – El Maitén junction (Puente Trapial – Puente Leones stretch): full closure for soil-cement works, from 5 October to 6 November 2026, from 14:00 to 18:00.

The good part of taking it slow

Many of the best things in the area are arranged with local agencies (Marble Caves, Exploradores Glacier, trekking). It is best to book the Activities in advance.

Payments and connectivity

At the Lodge we have Starlink wifi and accept cards. However, we cannot guarantee that every point along the route will, so it is wise to carry some cash.
