The caves from above

In these videos we fly drones along the shore and over the Marble Caves (also known as the Marble Cathedral), on the lake the Tehuelche called Chelenko. The aerial footage follows the lakeshore and moves in on the formations, where you can see the turquoise water and how the caves continue beneath the surface, something you can hardly make out from a boat or a kayak.

Getting there

How do you get to the Marble Caves?

The tours depart from Puerto Río Tranquilo, on the Carretera Austral (Route 7). From Chelenko Lodge it is about 15 km south, 20 to 30 minutes by car. If you are coming from Balmaceda airport, it is about 177 km, roughly 3.5 hours. On our Before you arrive page you will find each route in detail, the state of the road, and seasonal recommendations.

Choosing a tour

Boat or kayak: which is better?

Boat

The most accessible option. No experience needed, it is faster, and the route can include the main formations.

Kayak

Lets you go in slower and closer to the formations, for a calmer experience. It needs favorable lake conditions and some fitness.

If you are not sure, the boat is the safest choice for a first visit and for families.

When to go

What is the best time of year to visit?

To choose well, it helps to tell apart seeing the most intense colors from having a better chance of entering the caverns: they do not always coincide.

  • Best season for the turquoise: December to March.
  • Best season to try to enter the caverns: spring and autumn, especially October, November, March and April.
  • Best time of day: early in the morning, ideally a departure between 8:00 and 10:00 and preferably before noon, when light can reach into the cavities. The exact time depends on the season and the weather.

Can you go in winter?

Yes. In winter, June to August, boat trips run when operators judge conditions to be safe. Expect more cold, wind, rain and possible cancellations because of waves. Some operators also cut back their departures or close for a while.

  • Upside: fewer tourists and a quieter experience if the weather cooperates.
  • Downside: less certainty that you can sail, and less chance of the light conditions that bring out the turquoise.
  • Our advice: confirm the departure with the operator the same day and bring thermal clothing, a windbreaker and rain gear.

What is the difference between the Marble Chapels, the Cathedral and the Caverns?

They are all natural marble formations sculpted by water and wind over thousands of years. The difference lies mainly in their shape, size and appearance.

Marble Chapels (Capillas de Mármol): Formations with arches and columns that recall small chapels. Their pale, curved, eroded walls make very photogenic shapes above the turquoise water.

Marble Cathedral: A larger rock formation with a monumental look, whose walls and volumes evoke a cathedral. It is best appreciated from the lake.

Marble Caverns: The most descriptive name for the cavities, tunnels and caves that the water has carved into the rock. In some stretches, boats can pass under the arches or get close to the inner walls, depending on lake conditions.
